Concerning 'THE GOSPEL' - JESUS CHRIST
A Purified Conscience
Ken Wimer, PASTOR
"For if the blood of bulls and goats...sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God."
Hebrews:9:14-15
In the Old Testament wilderness camp of Israel, the law was that if someone so much as touched a dead body, he or she was made unclean. If one person died in the tent, all the family and the tent itself became at once defiled.
So it is, that all men are sinners today. When Adam disobeyed, we all died in him, Romans 5:12. Since then, everyone's conscience (the ability to know God in truth) is defiled. By Adam's disobedience, all human kind was plunged into darkness. Men are totally incapable of knowing God, Truth, or Good, unless God purifies their conscience, Ephesians 4:18,19.
The sprinkling of blood in the Old Testament was ordained of God to make defiled things ceremonially clean. This was a type of the true cleansing of the heart and soul of sinners by the blood of the Lord Jesus. "The blood of Christ" is a phrase that refers to His atoning sacrifice for the sins of God's elect, Hebrews 10:10. It is His perfect obedience to the Law, His suffering and death that cleanses condemned sinners whom God the Father chose by His eternal grace in Christ, II Timothy 1:9.
The Lord Jesus Christ offered Himself as a holy sacrifice to God the Father. He took upon Himself our human nature, lived a perfect life of obedience, then made Himself a sacrifice for sin. This is the only atonement for the putting away of sin.
The blood of Christ was offered through the Eternal Spirit of God. What good news for sinners whom the same Spirit draws to His Son! Christ has obtained an eternal redemption and pardon for His people. The Spirit then applies the blood of Christ to the conscience and speaks peace and pardon to it.
True peace of conscience is only possible by God's grace, through the blood of Jesus Christ. Any other work than His on behalf of the sinner is a dead work. We come to Him repenting of our own sin and trust Him alone to cleanse us. We serve Him, not with a slavish fear, but through a living and loving faith in Him.
