THUS SAITH THE LORD

Have you seen the giant billboards with white letters against a black background, signed, '-GOD?' Many think that this is a good way to get people's attention, and get them to consider God.? However, is this the way of the Lord God of the Bible? Here are three questions to consider carefully and prayerfully.

Is the motivation right?. In a recent interview on national television with the spokesman who is writing these slogans, he stated that the goal was to put something other than a Bible verse on these billboards. The reason was that using the Word of God alone would not catch people's attention, whereas a well thought out quip might. Do you see what this says about the Word of God itself? Does not the Lord God promise to bless His Word, and only His Word to the saving of His elect? Is it not blatant rebellion to assume that man's trite, creative slogans will have a greater effect on the minds and hearts of sinners, than the Word of God? God blesses His Word, Isaiah 55:11.

Is this the proper manner of addressing the Lord God? Nowhere in Scripture do you find the Lord of hosts addressing men and women simply as God. The pattern of Scripture is, 'Thus saith the Lord.' None of the prophets of Scripture presumed to speak for God, by using any common reference to the Lord. 'God' is a common expression used by men, that can refer to any profane idol. However, 'the Lord God,' can only be attributed to the Sovereign, Just and Holy God, with whom all have to do.

Is the message that of God's revealed word? Is the God of the Bible trying to get men's attention, or working out His perfect will and purpose?
