CHRIST TYPIFIED BY JOSEPH (8)
GENESIS 37-50
Good News From The Redeemer
Sermon by Pastor Daniel Parks
DECEMBER 15, 1999 - RADIO MESSAGE #299
(Continuing previous message; see A.W. Pink in Gleanings in Genesis.)
87. Joseph typified Christ when his brothers confessed to him their guilt and need of salvation (44:17): “What shall we say to my lord? ... Or how shall we clear ourselves? God has found out the iniquity of your servants: here we are, my lord’s slaves.” God’s elect will make the same confession to Christ (e.g. Acts 2:37; 16:29f).
88. Joseph typified Christ when his brothers, upon confessing their guilt and need of salvation, acknowledged his lordship (44:18): “O my lord, ... you are even like Pharaoh.” Christ’s elect will, upon confessing their guilt and need of salvation, acknowledge His lordship, as did Saul of Tarsus when he exclaimed “Lord, what do you want me to do” (Acts 9:6).
89. Joseph typified Christ when “Joseph made himself known to his brothers” (45:1). Only after sinners have confessed their guilt and acknowledged Christ’s lordship does He fully reveal Himself to them as Savior. Christ does not thusly reveal Himself to any who refuse to do so.
90. Joseph typified Christ when he rejoiced upon being acknowledged by his brothers (45:2): he “wept aloud.” Christ rejoices when sinners acknowledge Him in salvation (Luke 15:7): “there will be ... joy in heaven over one sinner who repents.”
91. Joseph typified Christ when he told his brothers “You shall dwell in the land of Goshen” (45:10). Goshen was of Egypt, but nevertheless separate from it, and “the best of the land” (47:6). Christ’s people are “in the world” but nevertheless “not of the world” (John 17:11,16). And since He dwells with them, their portion is “the best of the land.”
92. Joseph typified Christ when “he kissed all his brothers” (Genesis 45:15). Christ’s people, His bride, say, “Let Him kiss me with the kisses of His mouth” (Song of Solomon 1:2).
93. Joseph typified Christ when “his brothers talked with him” (45:15). Christ’s people enjoy sweet communion with Him in their prayers to Him and the reading of His Word.
94. Joseph typified Christ when he sent his brothers to “tell my father of all my glory” (45:13). Part of the Great Commission Christ gives to His people (Mark 16:15) is to “declare My glory” to all peoples (Isaiah 66:19).
95. Joseph typified Christ when he told his brothers to “bring my father” (45:13). This corresponds to another part of the Great Commission: “make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19).
96. Joseph typified Christ when he told his brothers “do not become troubled along the way” (45:24). Christ tells His people along their way, “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me” (John 14:1).
97. Joseph typified Christ when he went to Israel in “his chariot” (46:29). At the final day Christ will come for His own Israel “with His chariots” (Isaiah 66:15).
98 Joseph typified Christ when he enjoyed sweet communion with Israel (46:29): “he ... fell on his neck and wept on his neck a good while.” Christ will enjoy sweet communion with His own Israel for all eternity (Revelation 21:3).
99. Joseph typified Christ when he “presented ... to Pharaoh” his family (47:1f). Christ will in glory stand before His Father and declare “Here am I and the children whom God has given Me” (Hebrews 2:13).
100. Joseph typified Christ when he expounded to his brothers the glory of God’s overruling providence (50:20): “But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.” In glory, Christ will reveal more fully the glory of God’s overruling providence in their own lives. They will learn that God has fulfilled His decree that “all things work together for good to those who love God” (Romans 8:28) -- even their former wrath against His Christ (Acts 2:22-24; 3:13-18; 4:24-28).
