CHRIST TYPIFIED BY JOSEPH (7)
GENESIS 37-50
Good News From The Redeemer

Sermon by Pastor Daniel Parks
DECEMBER 18, 1999 - RADIO MESSAGE #298

(Continuing previous message; see A.W. Pink in Gleanings in Genesis.)

75. Joseph typified Christ when his brothers replied “we are honest men” (42:11). The natural man denies he is as bad as Christ says he is, and boasts of his self-righteousness (as in Philippians 3:4-6).

76. Joseph typified Christ when he told his brothers “you shall be kept in prison, that your words may be tested to see whether there is any truth in you” (42:16f). Christ imprisons sinners in spiritual conviction until they acknowledge the truth regarding their sin, and of Himself as their only hope of salvation.

77. Joseph typified Christ when he told his brothers “Do this and live, for I fear God” (42:18) -- implying that the only means by which he would release them would be that which honors God. Christ acknowledged the same (John 8:29): “for I always do those things that please Him.”

78. Joseph typified Christ when he told his brothers they would delivered only through the means of a substitute (42:19f): “let one of your brothers be confined to your prison house; but you [i.e. the rest of you], go.” In the case of Christ, this is the merciful aspect of His dealing with each sinner imprisoned in spiritual conviction (Job 33:34f): “... Then He is gracious to him, and says, ‘Deliver him from going down to the Pit; I have found a ransom.’” This ransom is Christ Himself (John 11:50f): the Spirit of Christ (and not Caiaphas “of himself”) declared “it is expedient ... that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish”; “Jesus would die for the nation.”

79. Joseph typified Christ when his brothers confessed “we are truly guilty” (42:21). Sinners who have learned the truth regarding Christ’s substitutionary work acknowledge their guilt when they confess “He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities” (Isaiah 53:5).

80. Joseph typified Christ when he “wept” over his brothers (42:24). Christ wept over sinners (Luke 19:41).

81. Joseph typified Christ when he supplied his brothers’ need of grain without taking their money (42:25): “Then Joseph gave a command to fill their sacks with grain” and “to restore every man’s money.” Christ declares that the terms of the gospel are “without money and without price” (Isaiah 55:1).

82. Joseph typified Christ when he commanded “to give [his brothers] provisions” even before they had come to a full knowledge of who he himself was (42:25). Christ will ascertain that none who were “sanctified by God the Father” in sovereign election before the foundation of the world will perish before they can be converted; and that they will be “preserved in Jesus Christ” until they are “called” to Himself in salvation (Jude v.1).

83. Joseph typified Christ when his brothers discovered their money in their sacks and “their hearts failed them and they were afraid” (42:27f). Christ will give awakened sinners no peace until they rest in Himself alone.

84. Joseph typified Christ when his brothers acknowledged that all that had happened to them had been the work of God (42:28): They exclaimed, “What is this that God has done to us?” Christ will convince convicted sinners with “godly sorrow” -- that which has God for its Author, not with a mere “sorrow of the world” (2 Corinthians 7:9f).

85. Joseph typified Christ when the his brothers found that “the famine [continued to be] severe” (43:1). The spiritual famine experienced by even awakened sinners will continue to be severe until they fully acknowledge Christ as Savior.

86. Joseph typified Christ when his brothers returned to him for grain with “double money in [their] hand” (43:12). When sinners realize that the self-righteousness they first presented was insufficient for Christ’s salvation, they “turn over a new leaf” and double their efforts to please His demands.

(To be continued.)
