CHRIST TYPIFIED BY JOSEPH (6)
GENESIS 37-50
Good News From The Redeemer

Sermon by Pastor Daniel Parks
DECEMBER 11, 1999 - RADIO MESSAGE #297

(Continuing previous message; see A.W. Pink in Gleanings in Genesis.)

62. Joseph typified Christ when he gave his first son a name meaning “Making Forgetful” (41:51): “Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh: ‘For God has made me forget all my toil and all my father’s house.’” When Old Covenant Israel was God’s son (as in Hosea 11:1) and rebelled against Him, Christ said “I, even I, will utterly forget and forsake you” (Jeremiah 23:39).

63. Joseph typified Christ when he gave his second son a name meaning “Fruitful” (41:52): “And the name of the second he called Ephraim: ‘For God has caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction.” When Christ was afflicted in the land of Israel, He told the nation whom He would “forget” that He would replace it with a “fruitful” nation (Matthew 21:43): “Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation bearing the fruits of it.” This new and fruitful nation is the church (1 Peter 2:9f), New Covenant Israel (Galatians 6:14-16).

64. Joseph typified Christ when, in the time of famine, the people were directed to him alone (41:55): “So when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread. Then Pharaoh said, ‘Go to Joseph ....’” For the spiritually famished, Christ alone is “the true bread from heaven” (John 6:32,33,35,48,50,51-58). “Nor is there salvation in any other” (Acts 4:12; cp. John 6:66-68).

65. Joseph typified Christ when he “opened all the storehouses and sold to the Egyptians” (41:56). Christ opens the storehouses of God to all the world (Isaiah 55:1f) and provides Himself as “the bread of God ... who ... gives life to the world” (John 6:33; cp. v.51).

66. Joseph typified Christ when “all countries came to Joseph in Egypt to buy grain” (41:57). Those who have come to Christ the Bread of Life will be gathered “out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation” (Revelation 5:9).

67. Joseph typified Christ in that his provisions for the hungry were “immeasurable” (41:49) -- like the “unsearchable riches of Christ” (Ephesians 3:8; cp. Romans 10:11f).

68. Joseph typified Christ when his “brothers went down to buy grain in Egypt” (42:1-3). The brothers of Christ are His elect (Hebrews 2:11f,17). In their time of spiritual hunger, they realize that the religion of their nativity is inadequate and begin to “seek” and “grope” elsewhere for the truth (Acts 17:27).

69. Joseph typified Christ when he “saw his brothers and recognized them” (42:5-7a). Christ recognizes His elect when they come to Him -- as He recognized Nathanael (John 1:47).

70. Joseph typified Christ when “his brothers ... did not recognize him” (42:8). Nathanael did not recognize Jesus as the Christ while approaching Him (John 1:46).

71. Joseph typified Christ when he dealt harshly with his brothers (42:7-17): “he acted as a stranger to them and spoke roughly to them” and “he put them all together in prison.” Christ deals harshly with sinners when they begin approaching Him: speaking roughly to them of their sinfulness (Romans 3:10-16,18); imprisoning them in their guilt by convincing them that they have no means of delivering themselves (Romans 3:19f); and convincing them that the way of peace is a stranger to them (Romans 3:17).

72. Joseph typified Christ when he told his brothers they would delivered only through the means of a substitute (42:18-24): “let one of your brothers be confined to your prison house; but you [i.e. the rest of you], go.” In the case of Christ, this is the merciful aspect of His dealing with each sinner imprisoned in spiritual conviction (Job 33:34f): “... Then He is gracious to him, and says, ‘Deliver him from going down to the Pit; I have found a ransom.’” This ransom is Christ Himself (John 11:50f): the Spirit of Christ (and not Caiaphas “of himself”) has declared “it is expedient ... that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish”; “Jesus would die for the nation.”
