(Continuing previous message; see A.W. Pink in Gleanings in Genesis.)

48. Joseph typified Christ when his counsel commended itself to his hearers (41:37-39): “So the advice was good in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of all his servants. ...” When Jesus taught, “the people were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority” (Matthew 7:28f; cp. 13:54) -- “No one ever spoke like this Man!” (John 7:46).

49. Joseph typified Christ in being exalted over Pharaoh’s house (41:40a): Pharaoh told Joseph “You shall be over my house.” “[God] ... gave [Christ] to be head over all things to the church” (Ephesians 1:22), “the house of God” (1 Timothy 3:15).

50. Joseph typified Christ in being exalted over all Egypt (41:40b,41): Pharaoh told Joseph “all my people shall be ruled according to you word. ... I have set you over all the land of Egypt.” God has given to Christ “all authority ... in heaven and on earth” (Matthew 28:18).

51. Joseph typified Christ in being exalted because of service already performed (see 41:14-41). God exalted Christ for the service He had already performed in His humiliation (Philippians 2:9): “Therefore God also has highly exalted Him.”

52. Joseph typified Christ in being exalted with the appropriate insignia (41:42): “Then Pharaoh took his signet ring off his hand and put it on Joseph’s hand; and he clothed him in garments of fine linen and put a gold chain around his neck.” Christ has been by God “crowned with glory and honor” (Hebrews 2:9).

53. Joseph typified Christ in being exalted publicly (41:43): “And [Pharaoh] had [Joseph] ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried out before him, ‘Bow the knee!’” The exaltation of Christ is publicly declared (Acts 2:36): “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus ... both Lord and Christ”; and God has decreed “that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow” (Philippians 2:10).

54. Joseph typified Christ in being given a new name at his exaltation (41:45): “And Pharaoh called Joseph’s name Zaphnath-Paaneah” -- the precise meaning of which is uncertain, but apparently referring to Joseph as “Savior.” “God has highly exalted [Christ] and given Him the name which is above every name.” (Philippians 2:9).

55. Joseph typified Christ when Pharaoh “gave him ... a wife” (41:45). God has “arranged a marriage for his son” (Matthew 22:2) and given to Him the church for a bride (Ephesians 5:22-32).

56. Joseph typified Christ in that his wife was a Gentile, not of his own people (41:45) -- “the daughter of Poti-Pherah priest of On.” The bride of Christ includes Gentiles, not Israelites only.

57. Joseph typified Christ by beginning his ministry when he was “thirty years old” (41:46a). “Now Jesus Himself began His ministry at about thirty years of age” (Luke 3:23).

58. Joseph typified Christ by beginning his ministry by “[going] out from the presence of Pharaoh” (41:46b). Christ “came forth from the Father ... into the world” to pursue His own ministry (John 16:28; cp. 3:16f; Galatians 4:4f).

59. Joseph typified Christ by pursuing an extensive ministry (41:46c): “throughout all the land of Egypt.” “Jesus went about all the cities and villages” in pursing His ministry (Matthew 9:35), and sends His preachers “to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

60. Joseph typified Christ when his exaltation was followed by “seven plentiful years” in which “Joseph gathered much grain” (41:47-49). The exaltation of Christ was followed by a great ingathering of souls (e.g. Acts 2:41; 4:4; 6:7), which yet continues on a smaller scale.

61. Joseph typified Christ when his “seven plentiful years” were followed by “seven years of famine” (41:53-57). The great ingathering of souls following the exaltation of Christ was followed by a time of severe persecution (e.g. Acts 8:1-3) which will culminate in Satan’s “little season” (Revelation 20:3,7-9a).
