(Continuing previous message; see A.W. Pink in Gleanings in Genesis.)

35. Joseph typified Christ in suffering at the hands of both Jews and Gentiles (39:20): having been already treated unfairly by his own brothers (heads of Jewish tribes), he now was cast into a Gentile prison. Christ suffered at the hands of both the Jewish King Herod and the Roman Procurator Pontius Pilate and both “Gentiles and the people of Israel” (Acts 4:27).

36. Joseph typified Christ in suffering severely (Psalm 105:18): “They hurt his feet with fetters.” Christ suffered severely on the cross.

37. Joseph typified Christ in winning the respect of his jailer (39:21): “the LORD ... gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.” As the consequence of the events which accompanied the death of Christ, the officiating centurion “glorified God, saying, ‘Certainly this was a righteous Man!’” (Luke 23:47).

38. Joseph typified Christ in being numbered with transgressors (40:1-3): he was imprisoned with “the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt” who had “offended their lord.” Christ was “numbered with the transgressors” (Isaiah 53:12) when He was crucified between “two robbers” (Mark 15:27f).

39. Joseph typified Christ in pronouncing a blessing to one transgressor, but a curse to the other (40:5-19): the butler was to be restored to his position, but the baker was to be executed. Christ blessed the repentant robber, saying “today you will be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43); but He will condemn the unrepentant robber (Revelation 20:11-15; 21:6-8).

40. Joseph typified Christ in giving glory to Jehovah for his knowledge of the future (40:8): he did not claim this power for himself, but acknowledged “interpretations belong to God.” Christ foretold the final judgment, but added “I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak” (John 12:49).

41. Joseph typified Christ when his predictions came true (40:20-22): the butler was restored and the baker was hanged “as Joseph had interpreted to them.” Christ declares of His own prophecies, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away” (Matthew 24:35).

42. Joseph typified Christ when he told the butler to “remember me when it is well with you” (40:14). All who have been made well through Christ will obey His commandment to observe the Lord’s Supper “in remembrance of Me” (Luke 22:19).

43. Joseph typified Christ in being eventually “brought ... out of the dungeon” (41:14). Christ was “loosed [from] the pains of death because it was not possible that He should be held by it” (Acts 2:24).

44. Joseph typified Christ in being delivered from prison by God (45:7-9): God, not Pharaoh, was Joseph’s true deliverer. As for Christ -- “This Jesus God has raised up” (Acts 2:32,24).

45. Joseph typified Christ in being the spokesman through whom “God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do” (41:25,28,32). God has done the same in “The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants -- things which must shortly take place” (Revelation 1:1).

46. Joseph typified Christ in his warning (41:25-36). He foretold of seven years of famine, and urged that preparations be made for them during the preceding seven years of plenty. Christ warned of the final judgment and urged men to prepare for it during this present gospel age (e.g. John 5:22f,25-30).

47. Joseph typified Christ in his counsel (41:25-36): not only did he urge preparations be made for the coming danger, he also described in great detail what those preparations should be. Christ does so as the “Wonderful Counselor” (Isaiah 9:6). Not only does He urge preparations be made for the coming judgment, He also sets forth faith in Himself as the only means of preparing for it (e.g. John 5:24).
