(Continuing previous message; see A.W. Pink in Gleanings in Genesis.)

23. Joseph typified Christ in being treated by his brothers with hypocrisy (37:27): they desired an ill end for him, but in such a way as to “let not our hand be upon him.” Christ was treated with hypocrisy by His countrymen, who would not enter Gentile quarters “lest they should be defiled” (John 18:28), but nevertheless demanded those Gentiles authorities kill an innocent man.

24. Joseph typified Christ in being sold at Judah’s request (37:26-28): “Then Judah said to his brothers, ‘... let us sell him to the Ishmaelites ....’” [S]o the brothers ... sold him to the Ishmaelites ....” Christ was “sold” at the request of another Judah (Matthew 26:14f; Hebrew Judah = Greek Ioudas = English Judas).

25. Joseph typified Christ in having his blood-sprinkled coat presented to his father (37:31f): “So they took Joseph’s tunic, killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the tunic in the blood. Then they ... brought it to their father ....” Christ in His bloodied coat of humanity presented Himself to His Father (Hebrews 9:11-14).

26. Joseph typified Christ in becoming a servant (39:1): an Egyptian bought him to serve in his house (cp. v.17). What humiliation for the favorite son of Jacob! “Christ Jesus ... made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a servant, and coming in the likeness of men” (Philippians 2:5-7). What humiliation for the favorite Son of God!

27. Joseph typified Christ in being made by Jehovah a prosperous servant (39:2f): “And his master saw that ... the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand.” Christ was called by Jehovah “My Servant” (Isaiah 52:13); “and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand” (Isaiah 53:10; cp. Psalm 1:3).

28. Joseph typified Christ in pleasing his master (39:4): “So Joseph found favor in his sight .... Then he made him overseer of his house ....” Christ said of His Father, “I always do those things that please Him” (John 8:29); and His Father made Him Lord over His house (Hebrews 3:1-6).

29. Joseph typified Christ in being made by Jehovah a blessing to others (39:5): “the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had in the house and in the field.” Christ is a blessing not only to those in God’s house, His church (1 Timothy 3:15), but also those in the field, the world (Matthew 13:38). Christ is “good to all” (Psalm 145:9ff).

30. Joseph typified Christ in remaining “handsome in form and appearance” after becoming a servant (39:6). Position had been reduced, but the person remained the same. Christ was reduced to humanity, but yet remained divine (John 1:14).

31. Joseph typified Christ in overcoming temptation (39:7-12): he fled when the temptress tried to seduce him. Christ was tempted as none other was, but refused to succumb and required the tempter to depart (Matthew 4:1-11; cp. Hebrews 4:15).

32. Joseph typified Christ in being falsely accused (39:13-18): his temptress could make no true charge against him, so she made a false one. Christ’s enemies could find no false testimony in anything He had ever said, so they accused Him of what He had never said (Matthew 26:59-61).

33. Joseph typified Christ in attempting no defense when he was falsely accused (39:19): no hint is given that he even opened his mouth when he was falsely accused. “Jesus kept silent” when He was falsely accused (Matthew 26:63; cp. Isaiah 53:7).

34. Joseph typified Christ when the charges against himself were not believed (39:20). There is a consensus among commentators that if Potiphar had believed the charges his wife made against Joseph, he would have had him executed. He instead had him “put into the prison.” Pilate did not believe the charges against Christ, twice saying “I find no fault in Him” (John 19:4,6), but permitting Christ to be crucified for fear of the Jews (vv.7-16).
