(Continuing previous message; see A.W. Pink in Gleanings in Genesis.)

11. Joseph typified Christ in being “envied” by his brothers (37:4). Because of their father’s partiality toward him (v.4) and his own foretelling of his sovereignty over them (vv.5-10), they envied him so much that “they conspired against him to kill him” (vv.18ff). Christ was envied by his countrymen for the same reasons, and they therefore plotted to kill Him (Mark 12:6f; John 12:18f; Matthew 27:17f,22).

12. Joseph typified Christ in being sent by his father to visit his brothers to inquire regarding their welfare (37:12f): “Israel said to Joseph, ‘Are not your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem? Come, I will send you to them. ... Please go and see if it is well with your brothers ... ’” Christ was sent by His Father on an errand of mercy for the welfare of the world (John 3:17): “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”

13. Joseph typified Christ in being instantly ready and willing to be sent by his father (37:13): “So he said to him, ‘Here I am.’” Christ was instantly ready and willing to be sent into the world by His Father, saying “Behold, I come” and “I delight to do Your will, O my God” (Psalm 40:6-8; Hebrews 10:5-7).

14. Joseph typified Christ in being sent “out of the valley of Hebron” (37:14), a term meaning “community.” Christ was sent into the world from the heavenly “community” where He enjoyed intimate communion with His Father (as indicated in John 17:5).

15. Joseph typified Christ in being “sent ... to Shechem” (37:14), a place where evil passions had led to great sin, sorrow, and shame (ch.34). Christ was sent to a world described in the same manner. “Gen. 34 well depicts in terse but solemn commentary the history of this earth” (A.W. Pink).

16. Joseph typified Christ in “wandering in the field” (37:15). Christ parabolically called this world a “field” (Matthew 13:38), and described Himself as a wanderer in it with “nowhere to lay His head” (Matthew 8:20).

17. Joseph typified Christ in seeking his brothers until he found them (37:15-17): having confessed “I am seeking my brothers,” “Joseph went after his brothers and found them in Dothan.” Christ confessed He had come “to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10), and illustrated this in the parables of the lost coin and the lost sheep (Luke 15:1-10).

18. Joseph typified Christ in being conspired against (37:18): “Now when [his brothers] saw him afar off, even before he came near them, they conspired against him to kill him.” The conspiracy against Christ was hatched by Herod even in His infancy (Matthew 2:16-18) -- when the time of His ministry was yet “afar off”; it continued throughout His ministry (e.g. Matthew 12:14).

19. Joseph typified Christ in being disbelieved by his brothers (37:19f): disbelieving the prophecies in his dreams (of vv.5-10), they plotted to kill him in order that “We shall see what will become of his dreams!” When Christ was buried, the chief priests and Pharisees remembered He had prophesied His resurrection, and therefore secured His tomb in order to be able to say “We shall see what will become of His dreams!”

20. Joseph typified Christ in being insulted and shamed through being stripped of his garment (37:23): “they stripped Joseph of his tunic, the tunic of many colors that was on him.” Christ was insulted and shamed by the soldiers at His crucifixion when they “took His garments” (John 19:23) and hanged Him naked on the tree.

21. Joseph typified Christ in being “cast ... into a pit” (37:24). Christ was placed in a tomb (Matthew 27:59f).

22. Joseph typified Christ in being “lifted ... out of the pit” -- alive! (37:28). Christ was lifted out of His tomb -- alive! (1 Peter 1:21): “God ... raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory.”
