Many Old Testament characters are presented as types of Christ. The first man Adam is expressly designated a type of Him who was to come (Romans 5:14), for which reason Christ is called the last Adam (1 Corinthians 15:45; see also vv.45-49 and Romans 5:12-19). And Melchizedek is expressly said to have been made like the Son of God, and Christ is said to have been in the likeness of Melchizedek (Hebrews 7:3,15; see ch.7 throughout).
Other Old Testament characters are also types of Christ even though they are not expressly said to have been. Such is the case of Joseph. The following similarities between the events of his life and that of Christ are so striking as to bring us to this conclusion (with much appreciation to A.W. Pink in Gleanings in Genesis).
1. Joseph typified Christ in his name (30:24): at his birth, his mother called him Joseph [Hebrew adding] because The LORD shall add to me another son (fulfilled in 35:16-18). Christ was at His birth given by His Father a name which declares His adding ministry (Matthew 1:21): call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins. All whom He saves are subtracted from the sons of disobedience (Ephesians 1:2) and added to the sons of God (John 1:12).
2. Joseph typified Christ in being a shepherd (37:2): he was occupied in feeding the flock. Christ is the Shepherd of Gods sheep (Psalm 23; Isaiah 40:11; John 10:11ff; Hebrews 13:20; 1 Peter 2:25; 5:4; Matthew 15:24).
3. Joseph typified Christ in testifying of the evil deeds of others (37:2): Joseph brought a bad report of [his sinful brothers] to his father. Christ confessed I testify of [the world] that its works are evil (John 7:7).
4. Joseph typified Christ in being especially loved by his father (37:3): Israel loved Joseph more than all his children. The Father loves Christ so much that of Him alone does He say, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased (Matthew 3:17; 17:5; cp. Proverbs 8:22,30).
5. Joseph typified Christ in his relation to his fathers age (37:3): he was the son of his old age. Christ is, in a manner of speaking, the Son of His Fathers old age, having been begotten by Him in eternity (Psalm 2:7; cp. John 17:5) and being the eternal Son of the Ancient of Days (Daniel 7:9,13,22).
6. Joseph typified Christ in being honored by his father through the presentation of a distinguishing garment (37:3): of Joseph alone do we read Israel ... made him a tunic of many colors. Christ was presented the garment of humanity in His incarnation (Hebrews 10:5), and in this garment He manifested the many colors of His divine glories and perfections (John 1:14).
7. Joseph typified Christ in being hated by his brothers because of who he was (37:4): they hated him and could not speak peaceably to him because they recognized him as their fathers favorite son. Christ was hated by His countrymen because of who He was: the co-equal and co-eternal Son of God (John 5:18; 10:30-33).
8. Joseph typified Christ in being hated by his brothers because of what he said (37:5-8): when he related to them the dream he had received from God, they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words. Christ was hated by His countrymen because of what He said, especially the doctrine He had received from God (John 8:40; also Luke 4:28f; John 7:7).
9. Joseph typified Christ in the prophecies God revealed regarding his future (37:5-10): his dreams foretold his exaltation over all his family. Christ was prophesied to be exalted over all peoples (Isaiah 9:6f; Luke 1:31-33).
10. Joseph typified Christ in foretelling his sovereignty (37:5-10) -- over both the field and the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars. Christ foretold His own sovereignty over both the earth and the heavens (Matthew 26:64; see also 28:18).
