Jesus Christ is Jehovah! We here continue the preceding message on Genesis 22:14, in which nine Old Testament ascriptions to Jehovah (in addition to His names) are applied to Christ in the New Testament.

x. The eternity of Jehovah’s word (Isaiah 40:8): “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.” This attribute of eternity is also ascribed by Christ to His own word (Matthew 24:35): “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”

xi. Jehovah’s glory. Jehovah declares His glory is His alone (Isaiah 42:8): “I am Jehovah, that is My name; and My glory I will not give to another.” However, this attribute was Christ’s from eternity, and was restored to Him at the conclusion of His earthly ministry (John 17:5): Christ prayed, “And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.” (Note the temporary surrender of this glory by Christ, and the eternal restoration of it, in Philippians 2:5-11.)

xii. Jehovah’s sure hand. Jehovah ensures the eternal security of believers by declaring “there is no one who can deliver out of My hand” (Isaiah 43:13). Christ declares the same and asserts that the hands of Himself and of His Father are one and the same (John 10:28-33ff): “And I give [believers] eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. I and My Father are one.” (The unbelieving Jews correctly understood Christ here teaching His co-equality with the Father [vv.31ff].)

xiii. The universal acknowledgment of Jehovah’s lordship (Isaiah 45:23): Jehovah declares, “I have sworn by Myself; the word has gone out of My mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, that to Me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall take an oath.” This universal acknowledgment of Jehovah’s lordship will be performed to Jehovah in the person of Jesus Christ:

1) Romans 14:10-12: “we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written: ‘As I live, says Jehovah [note “LORD” in NKJV text], every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall confess to God.’ So then each of us shall give account of himself to God” (cp. John 5:22; note that every one will give account to God by giving account to Christ).

2) Philippians 2:10f: “that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord [i.e. “that Jesus Christ is Jehovah”]” (cp. Acts 2:36; Romans 10:9; 1 Corinthians 12:3; Revelation 17:14; 19:16).

xiv. The outpouring of the Holy Spirit by Jehovah (Joel 2:28f): Jehovah prophesied, “And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; ... on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.” Peter the apostle declared on the Day of Pentecost (less than two months after the resurrection of Jesus Christ) that Jehovah had at that very moment fulfilled this prophecy (Acts 2:16-18); and Peter added that Jehovah had done so in the person of Jesus Christ (v.33): “[Jesus] poured out this which you now see and hear.”

xv. The salvation which is found by calling upon Jehovah’s name (Joel 2:32): “whoever calls upon the name of Jehovah shall be saved.” This promise is expressly declared to be fulfilled when one calls upon the name of Jesus Christ (Romans 10:8-13) -- when “you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead” (v.9).

Yea, Jehovah’s salvation -- the only true salvation -- is found only in the name of Jehovah Jesus Christ (Acts 4:10-12): “... Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Christ is Jehovah!
