Concerning 'THE GOSPEL' - JESUS CHRIST
Christ as Jehovah (2):
Jehovah's Titles are also Christ's
GENESIS 22:14
GOOD NEWS FROM THE REDEEMER
DANIEL E. PARKS, PASTOR
JULY 31, 1999 - RADIO MESSAGE #278
The fact that Jesus Christ is Jehovah was introduced in the preceding message on Genesis 22:14. This is true because Old Testament references to Jehovah are applied to Christ in the New Testament. For example, we here observe that ...
1. Jehovahs titles are also Christs. For example:
i. Christ is, like His Father, Jehovah the Creator. Regarding the Father, He is the everlasting God, Jehovah, the Creator of the ends of the earth (Isaiah 40:20). So is Christ: For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible (Colossians 1:16; cp. John 1:3; Hebrews 1:10).
ii. Christ is, like His Father, The Almighty. Regarding the Father, Jehovah appeared to Abram and said to him, I am Almighty God (Genesis 17:1). So is Christ: His name is Mighty God (Isaiah 9:6), and He is the Almighty (Revelation 1:8).
iii. Christ is, like His Father, the I AM. Regarding the Father, God said to Moses, I AM WHO I AM (Exodus 3:14). So is Christ: Jesus said ..., Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM (John 8:58).
iv. Christ is, like His Father, God. Regarding the Father, He declares I am Jehovah your God (Exodus 20:2). So is Christ: But to the Son [the Father] says, Your throne, O God, is forever and ever (Hebrews 1:8).
v. Christ is, like His Father, the Rock. Regarding the Father, who is God, except Jehovah? And who is a rock, except our God? (2 Samuel 22:32). So is Christ: For [Israel in the wilderness] drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ (1 Corinthians 10:4).
vi. Christ is, like His Father, the Shepherd. Regarding the Father, saints confess Jehovah is my shepherd (Psalm 23:1). So is Christ: He is the good shepherd (John 10:11ff) and great Shepherd (Hebrews 13:20) and Chief Shepherd (1 Peter 5:4), the Shepherd and Overseer of [the saints] souls (1 Peter 2:25).
vii. Christ is, like His Father, the Light. Regarding the Father, saints confess Jehovah is my light (Psalm 27:1). So is Christ: He is the true Light (John 1:9; 1 John 2:8) who declares, I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life (John 8:12).
viii. Christ is, like His Father, the Judge. Regarding the Father, God Himself is Judge (Psalm 50:6) -- the Judge of all the earth (Genesis 18:25). So is Christ: For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son, that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son [to the same degree to which the Father is to be honored] does not honor the Father who sent Him (John 5:22f).
ix. Christ is, like His Father, the Savior. Regarding the Father, He declares, I, even I, am Jehovah, and besides Me there is no savior (Isaiah 43:14). So is Christ: He is Jesus Christ our Savior (Titus 3:4-6), and He is the only Savior (Acts 4:10-12).
x. Christ is, like His Father, the Redeemer. Regarding the Father, He is Jehovah, [Israels] Redeemer (Isaiah 43:14). So is Christ: saints are told you were ... redeemed with ... the precious blood of Christ (1 Peter 1:18f) -- the blood of God! (Acts 20:28).
xi. Christ is, like His Father, the King. Regarding the Father, He says, I am Jehovah, your Holy One, the Creator of Israel, your King (Isaiah 43:15). So is Christ: He is King of the saints (Revelation 15:3) and KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS (Revelation 19:11-16; 17:14).
xii. Christ is, like His Father, The First and the Last. Regarding the Father, Thus says Jehovah, ... I am the First and I am the Last (Isaiah 44:6). So is Christ: He says, I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last (Revelation 22:13; cp. 1:8,17; 2:8).
(In the subsequent message we will, D.V., observe that various other ascriptions to Jehovah are applied to Christ.)
Your servant for Jesus' sake.
