More Good Soup
by Pastor Paul Mahan
I was Hungry!
You may remember that one of our ladies fixed me some delicious vegetable soup some time ago. Well another dear sister fixed me some of her soup and I must say, that, it was just as good as the other. How I enjoyed that soup the other day. And do you know what made that soup so good to me? I WAS HUNGRY! (Not taking anything away from the sister’s ability as a cook), but HUNGER always makes food taste better. The same is true concerning the hearing of God’s Word (Gospel).
Hunger!
That which makes the gospel, gospel indeed, is HUNGER! The good news is truly good news to one who needs to hear it. The sound of mercy is good news indeed to one who feels his guilt. The Word of grace is grace indeed to one who feels his helplessness. To the one who has walked through the hot and dry valley of this world (‘Baca’), God makes the gospel "a well of water", an oasis, a haven of rest in a dry and thirsty land.
It is a Good Message!
It has been said before, that, if the gospel is preached, i.e. if God is exalted, man abased, Christ lifted up, and sinners pointed to Him...IT IS A GOOD MESSAGE! And if it does not touch us or profit us, then the problem lies with us. Like physical hunger, hunger for the Word is a blessing from God which indicates life. When a newborn child enters this physical world, it immediately craves the breast. No hunger, no life! Hence the exhortation "as newborn babes desire the sincere milk of the Word that you may grow thereby" (I Peter 2:2). What we all must do before hearing the word is ask God to create a hunger and thirst for His Word; to prepare our hearts to receive It. Do that now, as you read this and prepare to hear the morning message. --Paul Mahan
