Concerning 'THE GOSPEL' - JESUS CHRIST
While There Is Hope
Proverbs 19:18
Chasten thy son while there is hope...
I'll tell you, being a parent is the toughest of jobs. It has great reward, but the price is high. How shall we treat this never-ceasing bundle of energy called a human child? Good instruction is in our scripture. Here it is in the Amplified Bible:
"Discipline your son while there is hope, but do not (indulge your angry resentments by undue chastisements and) set yourself to his ruin."
This is what God calls good balance. If the child needs a paddle to the backside, then apply it before it is too late. And be sure of this: if there is no hurt with it, you might as well not do it at all. But don't set yourself to his ruin by undue chastisement, whether physical or vocal. This is the same as Eph. 6:4 "And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath."
I believe the teaching is this. Parents, you are the boss. Let them know who the boss is but be a good boss. Learn to speak kindly but with great authority. Being depraved as a child is, frequently he will attempt to usurp your authority. If he gets away with it once, he will be bold to want more. You can see the end of that! Can't you??
There is one thing I observe in our day. More and more young ones are doing their own thing, and Isa. 3:5 is in full effect, "The child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient." The moral of all this is, don't set yourself to your child's ruin either in the way of hardness or softness. Do right, "while there is hope." I know it is a tough job! Ah, but there is such joy when you "train up a child in the way he should go."
