STRAIGHTWAY OUT OF THE WATER
MATTHEW 3:16
Matthew 3:16
"And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up STRAIGHTWAY OUT OF THE WATER,"
Maybe I am overlooking something but my research
indicates that the Greek word, 'apo',
which was translated in the King James Version as
'OUT', in the above verse, is probably not correct. In most
cases 'apo' is translated into
'FROM'. This word
'apo' usually denotes SEPARATION or DEPARTURE,
'AWAY' from something such as can be seen
in these verses:
Matthew 3:13
"Jesus FROM (apo) Galilee."
Matthew 17:9
"They came down FROM (apo) the mountain."
The Greek word 'euthus' was translated in Matthew 3:16 as STRAIGHTWAY. This Greek word is also translated; IMMEDIATELY, AT ONCE and FORTHWITH. So, Matthew 3:16 can also be translated as:
Matthew 3:16 - ReTranslated
"And Jesus, when he was baptized, went IMMEDIATELY FROM THE WATER."
This translation or interpretation would put a different meaning on the words. Instead of referring to the TYPE OF BAPTISM (out of - immersion), which some refer to, it indicates to me that JESUS WAS ENTERING UPON HIS WORK WITH THE UTMOST URGENCY (immediately from). Also, as it indicates in verse 6 of Matthew 3, others where "confessing their sins." They may have remained in the water as they did this. Jesus, of course, did not have to confess anything. Therefore he went IMMEDIATELY FROM the water.
